Questions about the credential
PMI-CP questions, answered
What is the PMI-CP?
PMI-CP is the Project Management Institute's Construction Professional in Built Environment Projects credential. It is for people who manage construction and built-environment projects. PMI requires four foundational courses, three years of construction or built-environment project experience in the last ten years, and a 120-question exam taken in 230 minutes.
Is PMI-CP the same as the PMP?
No. The PMP is PMI's general project management credential and applies across industries. PMI-CP is specific to construction and the built environment, with its own courses and exam. You do not need the PMP to earn PMI-CP, and many construction managers hold both.
Who should consider PMI-CP?
Contractors, construction managers, engineers, architects, planners and quantity surveyors who already run construction or built-environment projects, and service members with construction, engineering or facilities experience who want a credential that matches that work.
Can I prepare for PMI-CP with SMLA?
SMLA is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. Ask us about PMI-CP and we will tell you what is available and when. If you already have project experience outside construction, our PMP and CAPM class is enrolling now.
Can military funding pay for a PMI credential?
Army Credentialing Assistance and Air Force and Navy COOL fund credentials that appear on each service's COOL list. The PMP and CAPM are listed; check the COOL list for PMI-CP or ask us before you submit a request, and we will confirm what your funding covers.
What comes after PMI-CP?
Three advanced PMI courses lead toward the PMI Senior Construction Professional (PMI-SCP) credential. Requirements are set by PMI, so check pmi.org for the current rules before you plan the sequence.
